CVT2SBBS
Convert to SuperBBS

───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
CVT2SBBS is a File convertor for converting Qbbs 2.75+, Remote
Access 1.10+, and Maximus to the SuperBBS 1.16 format. I wrote this in
a attempt to make it easier on the Sysop of another BBS package to
convert over to SuperBBS, or at least to give SuperBBS a try.
This program has been tested on several different machines and will
require at least 10 free file handles in order to run. You can run it
in a DV window but you should not try to run it while your BBS is up as
the files are not opened in share mode. All of the input files are
opened in read only mode. If you use the same input and output
directory and a USERS.BBS file is found it will be renamed to
USERS.OLD. In any case the program should tell you what is going on
while it is working. Before running it I would recommend creating a
temporary directory to hold the output files and work from there.
I tried to cover every little detail in the conversion. What I mean
is if your BBS package has a variable that Sbbs uses it will be used,
even down to your color schemes. SuperBBS does contain more info on the
users than most so you will have to check the converted files for
accuracy on that note.
QUICKBBS Conversion
The following files will be needed to make a complete conversion
from QuickBBS 2.75 to SuperBBS.
USERS.BBS
ALIAS.BBS
QUICKCFG.DAT
MSGCFG.DAT
EVENTCFG.DAT
COMBINED.BBS
FILECFG.DAT
LIMITS.CTL
If any one of these files are not present the conversion will not
fully complete. All of these files should be present in your Qbbs main
directory. I was not sure about where the users files are stored so if
the program cannot find them in the main it will look for them in the
message base directory( like RA ). Sbbs stores quite a bit more info
than Qbbs does so you must run CONFIG.EXE after the conversion and add
any missing data. Don't forget to check your Users birthdates with
SBBSUSER.EXE, Qbbs stores the birthdate in a way that allows for a year
between 1600 and 833,000 so I limited it to the 1900-2000, this should
cover everyone?
REMOTE ACCESS Conversion
The following files will be needed to make a complete conversion
from Remote Access 1.10 to SuperBBS.
CONFIG.RA
USERSXI.BBS
EVENTS.RA
FILES.RA
MESSAGES.RA
LIMITS.CTL
USERS.BBS
PROTOCOL.RA
I any of these files are not present the conversion will not
fully complete. If the users files are not found in the input directory
the program will look in the message base directory as defined in
config.ra for the files. I included the conversion of the protocol.ra
but don't know how well the RA protocol definitions will work with
SuperBBS, look for things like *M in RA is *S in Sbbs. Everything else
converted fine. Sbbs does store more info and has more configuration
items. Run CONFIG.EXE and check everything over.
MAXIMUS Conversion
At the moment all I can convert in Max is the users file. I will
try to get to the other files soon. The program will ask you for the
name of the user file since Max can have different names.
DISCLAIMER
Please don't hold any shortfalls of this program against the
authors of SuperBBS, I am doing this just to help people out. I can't
gaurantee that this program will do anything but take up some disk
space but when properly used it can make your life a lot easier and
save you hours of time.
EXTRA INFORMATION
I can't stress this enough but MAKE A BACK UP OF YOUR FILES before
running anything that will read or modify them. This converter will
check for existence of SuperBBS files and ask you if you want to
overwrite them. My suggestion is to make a temporary directory and use
this for the output path, this could save you some grief if it was to
overwrite your files.
Thanks for at least trying SuperBBS, I think you will be very
please with the job that Aki and Risto has done.
If you have problems with this program or questions on the setup of
Sbbs I would be more than happy to help. I have some text files on
setting up Sbbs in a multi-node environment and other little helpful
things. Just send me a message through the SUPERBBS echo or netmail me
at either 1:3812/10 or 1:3812/11.
